Meet the Artist
Kairat (Kyle) Sydykov is a PhD geophysicist turned artist, who approaches figurative painting with the curiosity of a scientist and the freedom of an abstract vision.
A student at the Glassell School of Art, the teaching institute of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, he draws inspiration from landscapes, cityscapes and the choreography of tennis, shaped in part by his own experience as an advanced club player.
His paintings are held in numerous private collections in the U.S., Kazakhstan, and Russia.
Kairat Sydykov was born in Kazakhstan and received his first recognition at the age of six, when his drawing was featured on a local television program after winning a children’s art competition.
Since then, drawing, painting, and interior design have remained important parts of his life. Kairat became seriously engaged in painting after retiring and settling in Houston in 2010.
A geophysicist with a PhD, he approaches representational painting with the curiosity of a scientist, informed by visits to many world-renowned art museums and deep immersion in the visual arts.
Kairat studied for five years at the Glassell School of Art, the teaching institute of the Museum of Fine Arts , Houston (MFAH). His studies included 2D and 3D design, color theory, advanced painting, portraiture, abstraction, digital photography, sculpture, and art history.
In 2026, the MFAH selected Kairat’s CityScale, featured on this site, for display at the Kinder Morgan Building in downtown Houston as part of a showcase of outstanding student work from the Glassell School of Art.
Kairat initially worked in acrylics before transitioning to oil painting, which proved better suited to his deliberate style. His work incorporates glazing, impasto, layered traditional and alla prima techniques.
More than 60 of Kairat’s paintings are held in private collections in the United States, Kazakhstan, and Russia.
